WHOLE PICTURE EP LYRICS

WHOLE PICTURE
So ‘Whole Picture’ is inspired by a day I went swimming with my daughter. She spend most of the time holding on to a blow up ball because she thought she might sink! After a little while the ball slipped out from under her and she had a brief  look of fear in her eyes. She was actually wearing arms bands too so she was never actually going to sink. I didn’t reach out to catch her when the ball slipped away because I wanted her to discover for herself she would be ok. So that moment made me think about how I can guide her in the right way but she will learn things for herself are she grows up. I will watch her and help her but not tell her everything but it is her life live and not mine. So the verse is about the swimming part and then the chorus is about her life.  The lyrics in the bridge section describe that idea of not wanting tell her everything or give it all away because life is about the excitement of discovering new things…

Put your big toe in the water
To find out if it’s ok.
Stepping in deeper
Holding on for dear life.
Are you brave enough
To find out what might happen next?

Watch you go your own way
In this land
Watch you find your own way
Through this life.

Just kicking those legs
Turning round in circles.
You slip and fall
With the fear in your eyes
But you find out it’s OK
You can trust, you can float own way.

Watch you go your own
In this land
Watch you find your own way
Through this life.

Trying not to give the whole game away
Trying not to paint the whole picture.

BEYOND THE FLAGS
Beyond the Flags’ is inspired by a story of an Australian open water swimmer I read on a blog post. He was part of a swimming club where the leaders always told him to swim inside the flags because this was the best place to be. After a few years he started to question why he needed to stay inside the flags and asked the leaders. They just said it was for the best and so the swimmer left the club. He decided he wanted to swim beyond the flags and find out what was out there. When he did this he found more freedom and peace. So this is a song about doing things differently and not always doing things the way you are told to…

Taking my clothes off
Changing my skin
Doing the same thing
Over and over again
My eyes are drifting
Across the horizon
What is left unseen?
What is left unsaid?

It’s ok, it’s alright
I’m not chasing anymore
It’s ok, it’s alright
Now I’m welcome aboard
It’s ok, it’s alright
I’m not chasing anymore
Have a finally found my home
Away from home.

The sand are shifting
Beneath my feet
Seeing stories
Recounting the people I meet
Time drifts away
Into another
Not the same old again
I don’t want another regret.

Beyond the flags
Beyond the flags
Beyond the flags

It’s ok, it’s alright
I’m not chasing anymore
It’s ok, it’s alright
Now I’m welcome aboard
It’s ok, it’s alright
I’m not chasing anymore
Have a finally found my home
Away from home.

LEFT TO HIDE
Left to Hide is quite an old song written back when I was in a loud guitar band. I have reworked it for this EP but kept the lyrics the same. The song talks about forgiveness and moving forward when things go a bit wrong. The chorus describes how sometimes we can’t hide from things and we just have to say sorry, move on and start again at the start of the next new day. Guilt can at times stop us living life in it fullness so don’t let it spoil things…

Now you say its time to start again
Stop don’t look back its all in the past
We’ve come along way
But what do we do now?
Climb aboard trust in what you know
You said so, You said so, You said so.

Close your eyes
Push it all outside
There’s no where left to hide
Lift your face
Underneath the Sun
There’s no where left to hide

You cant make it all disappear
Insane memories are trying to
Stake their claim
My mind spins forwards and backwards
Crimson into blue
You stood me down, you gazed upon high
You listen and you answered.

Close your eyes
Push it all outside
There’s no where left to hide
Lift your face
Underneath the Sun
There’s no where left to hide

SOMETHING WORTH KEEPING
‘Something Worth Keeping’ is inspired by my house being damaged by a flood my next door neighbour had last Christmas. We started smelling something strange in our front room and low and behold we found damp and our carpet, floor boards and pieces of furniture slowly got wrecked. We had to move lots of things about while we had big, noisy electric fans in for a number of weeks to dry the place out. It was in chaos for what felt like months. So the song talks about my frustration about the situation and chorus describes the idea of trying to find a way forward and something worth keeping. In the middle of it all I did think well we could be alot worse off and it isn’t that bad really in the grand scheme of things…

Stacked up photographs
Memories turned around.
All this talking makes my heart heavy.
Constant white noise
Shivers down my spine
Everyone is dragging their heals

Scraping away at the surface
Trying to see clearly
Scraping away at the surface
Find something worth keeping

Blood shot tired eyes
Cold shaking hands
Dreams of normality fill my daily thoughts

Scraping away at the surface
Trying to see clearly
Scraping away at the surface
Find something worth keeping

GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL
‘Gunfight at the OK Corral’ is not a song I have written myself. It is actually written by my good friend Andy Mort who is ATLUM SCHEMA. I have always loved this song and so I started playing it live and then I asked Andy if I could cover it and kindly he agreed. I do not know exactly what Andy wrote is about as I have deliberately not asked him. Since I recorded the video blog I have thought alot more about the song. I feel the song is about how everyone, at the end of the day, is only human and equal and maybe we should work together more. Maybe I am wrong about the song, maybe I will ask Andy one day. What do you think?

You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
Gunfight gunfight, we might die tonight

You want in, you want in and it’s true,
You want out, but what else can you do?
You know what, well what is there to lose,
Cos you know it is now all about to unglue

They banned force, its for the good of all,
cos their guns are shooting something more
We got friends,
We got friends you got foes,
both on the wrong side of the road.

You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
Gunfight gunfight we might die tonight

I step out to hear the punch of guns.
I look out to see what they have done.
Its gone quiet, the lull after the storm
The bee sting as bullets from the confused swarm flew

You banned force, its for the good of all
but their guns are killing to implore
We got  friends, we got friends we got foes,
Both on the wrong side of the road

You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
You and me, we’re on each other’s side.
Gunfight gunfight we might die tonight

DAVE’S SONG
Dave’s Song was written quite quickly one evening after I received a message saying that a good friend was loosing the battle with his illness and only had hours to live. The song talks a little about his life and then the idea of what he might meet when he passed away. The chorus is about how although it is the end of his life, it could also be the start of something else. It is a pretty emotional song as Dave was a very big inspiration for me. I hope you like it. The recording on the EP was recorded in one take completely live.

You’ve walked on this earth for many long years
You’ve dreamed the big dreams and prayed the great prayers
But the stitching is coming undone
And things are getting frayed
This is not the end
It’s just the start from a different place

Where do you go now?
Where do you go now?

Close your eyes and wake up somewhere new
Good friends welcome you, a table set to celebrate
A biography of all your hopes and loves
Sins rubbed out and played in a advance
This is not the end
It’s just the start from a different place

Where do we go now?
Where do we go now?

This is not the end
It’s just the start from a different place
This is not the end
It’s just the start from a different place

FINGERPRINT EP LYRICS

OPEN
This is a song written when I first writing songs for Stylusboy. It’s about looking at what might happen next, trying opportunities when you are given them, pushing the doors. It is also about life’s questions; Where does the sadness or the tears go? Where does time go when you have so much to get done? What are you meant to do next? Sometimes I just wish someone would open the door and pull me through, rather than me having to decide which door to open and whether or not I should walk through it.

There’s one thing that I need to know
Like where do all my tears go?
You lean upon my shoulder
And wipe them carefully away

But the clouds roll on by
Revealing the sunshine

There’s one thing that I need to know
Like where do all my days go?
So many things to do and say
My never ending pencilled list

But the clouds roll on by
Revealing the sunshine

Open the door
Pull me to the inside, pull me to the inside
Open the door
Pull me to the inside, pull me in this time.

There’s one thing that I need to know
Like where’s my life meant to go?
Moving this way, moving that.
One step forwards, two steps back.

But the clouds roll on by
Revealing the sunshine

Open the door
Pull me to the inside, pull me to the inside
Open the door
Pull me to the inside, pull me to the inside
Open the door
Pull me to the inside, pull me in this time

Jigsaw
I wrote this song after I walked past a jigsaw that had been dropped on the floor outside my local chip shop. It got me thinking about the idea of a jigsaw being a bit like the pieces of your life. So I asked lots of questions about the pieces of the jigsaw. Some people store the pieces of their jigsaw carefully and don’t share them with anyone else. What is it that makes your jigsaw complete? Is it not complete? Are you missing something? Do you know what is missing?

Are your pieces hidden away?
Up on shelf gathering dust
Are your pieces scattered all around?
Under the chair, in the plant pot
Are you pieces laid out for all to see?
The outline is there with a missing piece

Your make my jigsaw so complete
A site to behold
Beautiful
Your make my jigsaw so complete
A sight to behold
Beautiful

Her delicate pieces placed so carefully
Always correct and so direct
His small pieces spread out on the floor
They’re just colour coded with no clear picture.
Someone’s pieces spilled out on the floor
Lost this day or meant that way?

Your make my jigsaw so complete
A sight to behold
Beautiful
Your make my jigsaw so complete
A sight to behold
Beautiful

Are your pieces beautiful?
Are your pieces beautiful?
Are your pieces beautiful?
Are your pieces beautiful?

Stopclock
This is written about waiting for my son Noah to be born and holding him in my arms for the first time. I have a little girl called Evie and so the chorus is me thinking about what it was going to be like with two children! Towards the end of the song the chorus line changes and I say how amazing it is.

I’m pacing the room
Walking the minutes of this day away
My patience is wearing
So thin on the ground
I’ll just have to wait.

This isn’t going to be so easy
This isn’t going to be so easy

The day has moved on
The light turning grey then into the night
You open your eyes
And without a sound
You speak so clearly

This isn’t going to be so easy
This isn’t going to be so easy

And now that you’re here
You sleep through the stars and the moon in the sky
Making me see

This might just be so easy and lovely
This might just be so easy and perfect

Back to the Start
I used to be a band and one day I had a look at loads of photos and videos from the time in that band. It is about remembering those good times and kind of wishing that I was still with the band. At the same time knowing that there was reason why it ended, but what is going to happen next? The idea could be used to represent any situation from the past that you might wish you could go back and do again, but actually you know that it is for the best that it ended when it did.

I’m sitting, I’m watching
I’m starring and I’m dreaming
Remembering all the good times.
I’m looking back into the past
And I’m starring at my own face
Singing along with the good tunes

Come on lead me now
Back to the start
Come on lead me now
Back to where it all began
Come on lead me now
Back to the start
Back to the start

I’m hanging onto a thread
Of something that I kind of regret
The moments past, its time to move on
Stop, hang on old man
There’s a reason why it all began
We might pick up where we left off.

I’ve got something to say to you.
Will you be there now?
I’ve got something to say to you.

Come on lead me now
Back to the start
Come on lead me now
Back to where it all began
Come on lead me now
Back to the start
Back to the start

Roses and Love Hearts
This song is about my lovely lady wife. It is a simple love song. It is the simple things that make me love her.

It’s three AM and I can’t sleep
Twisting around you sleep next to me.
With a warm embrace you said goodnight
Wrap myself around you again

Speak the words
All my love

Something simple
Something simple
Something simple
Once again

Silver bands bring back memories
Life is not all about roses and love hearts

Speak the words
All my love

Something simple
Something simple
Something simple
Once again

A Song for Noah
The title says it all really. It is a song for Noah, my little boy. It is about wondering what he might become and wanting the best for him. Knowing that I would do anything for him. I wrote it pretty quickly one evening sat on the kitchen floor while i was playing some older songs before a gig.

Every time I look at you big blue eyes
I see a light that’s burning oh so bright
I pray it lasts until you leave home
There’s not rush cause I’m not letting go

Open up those big blue eyes
Stare at me so I know
I see a life full of hope
Don’t let go don’t let it fall away

Hold my hand
And I’ll show you the way
Hold my hand
And I’ll guide you along the way

Every time I I look upon those eyes
I say thanks for your life
Wipe the tears from those eyes
It’s alright cause I’m not letting go

Hold my hand
And I’ll show you the way
Hold my hand
And I’ll guide you along the way
I’ll guide you along the way
I’ll guide you along the way
I’ll guide you along the way
