Recording some covers live…

April 22, 2011

Earlier this week I went round to Rachel’s house to record some covers to post on YouTube and for free downloads. I had seen how successful this had been for a number of acts and also thought it was about time that I recorded some of the covers we sometimes play in our sets.

I took round my recording equipment and set up a microphone for each of us and then a line in for my guitar. I used my studio mike with a pop shield and Rachel used my sm58. I set this up a short distance from her so we didn’t get any hisses and pops. After trying out a few things and checking the sound we were all set. I set up my flipcam on a tripod and found a good position to film from. We were all set. We recorded seven covers all live and in one take. The first one was ‘When I Argue I See Shapes’ by Idlewild. We hadn’t actually played this one together before this evening so this was only the third time we had played it. If you watch the video you can see Rachel checking her iPhone for the words! I’m never great at learning words so you can see my checking the words during the recordings which is quite funny!

Anyway over the rest of the evening we recorded six more tunes but I’m not going to tell you what they are just yet! I’m going to post them every Friday over the next few weeks before the release or my new ep ‘Whole Picture’ on June 6th. I am going to use the website Tweet for a Track which allows you to get these mp3s for free by posting on Twitter or Facebook about the song. I hope you like them. All the tracks and videos are on the LIVE COVERS page. Here are a few photos from the session…
