Stylusboy, Coventry singer-songwriter Steve Jones, creates indie-folk music influenced by contemporary songwriters like Damien Rice and John Smith as well as classic performers such as Nick Drake and Neil Young.
Out Upon the Ocean EP is a collection of 4 songs with the lead track being taken from Stylusboy’s second album ‘Routes’ set for release this September. The title song Out Upon the Ocean is a gorgeous mix of Jones’ ear for a melody and an uplifting lyrical story of two lovers separated by the ocean. It features the musical talents and longtime collaborators John Parker (Nizlopi, Emily Mae Winters, Burning Salt) on double bass, Tim Bowes on Drums (The Destroyers) alongside critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Wes Finch on electric guitar and vintage blues starlet Hollie Hewitt on harmonies. BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Introducing have already made the song their Tune of the Day and Hot Music Live have described Stylusboy as “another one of those great unique voices”. Other tracks on the EP include previously unreleased song Embrace the View recorded live for BBC C&W Introducing and two songs recorded live at infamous and award-winning London venue The Green Note.
Stylusboy has performed all over the UK including shows at St Pancras Old Church in London and Warwick Arts Centre in his home city of Coventry. He has supported the likes of John Smith, Newton Faulkner, Megson Danny and the Champions of the World, Grant-Lee Phillips, MG Boulter and Lucy Ward. As befitting a modern-day troubadour he’s also performed one-to-one shows in Emily Barker’s Folk in a Box, played festivals such as Greenbelt, Wychwood Festival and Mosely Folk Festival and has played numerous house concerts and online gigs (he pioneered online gigs well before Facebook Live was a thing!). A recent songwriting commission from Coventry City of Culture 2021 will see him produce a short song to celebrate 70 years of the European Human Rights.
Stylusboy’s debut album ‘Hospitality for Hope’ released in 2013 received acclaim and support from the likes of Acoustic Magazine, R2 Magazine, For Folks Sake, God is in the TV as well as praise from BBC Introducing, BBC 6Music, Guardian Online and Amazing Radio. Since then he has released a live album, an EP of revisited songs as well of an album of cover songs created during a year-long project called ‘The Duvet Collection’.
Inspired by his Fine Art background, Stylusboy always takes great care in the detail of each of his releases to create handmade sleeves for the CDs. The artwork for Out Upon the Ocean EP has been drawn by artist Paula Oakley and features the fishing boat referenced in the song’s lyrics.
The EP is released on May 10th on Stylusboy’s own label Tortise Recordings through Bandcamp and all major digital platforms via AWAL (Kobalt Records).
